Costa Mesa Mourns the Loss of Beloved Community Advocate Jean Forbath
Costa Mesa has lost a shining light in its community, Jean Forbath, who passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 20, 2025, at the remarkable age of 95. Her family and loved ones were by her side, surrounding her with love during her final moments, a poignant farewell that coincided with Easter Sunday and the passing of Pope Francis.
Forbath was more than just a long-time resident; she was a beacon of hope for many in the community. Her enduring legacy includes being honored as Costa Mesa’s “Woman of the Year” in 2017 and receiving the O.C. Human Relation Commission’s “Legacy Awards” for her tireless contributions to civil rights.
A Lifelong Commitment to Service
Jean’s humanitarian journey began in 1969 when she took an adult education class at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. Inspired by discussions on social doctrines, she felt compelled to act on the needs of her neighbors. What started as a personal effort to help those in need through food and clothing donations blossomed into something far bigger. In 1970, she helped found the nonprofit Share Our Selves (SOS), an organization that has since grown into a substantial network of volunteers, healthcare providers, and various service organizations.
Today, SOS serves tens of thousands throughout Orange County, providing an essential lifeline for those who need it most. Such monumental efforts included the establishment of the first free medical and dental clinic by Forbath in 1985. She also introduced the “Adopt a Family” Christmas program, which touches the lives of around 1,200 families each year with vital support.
Impact and Enduring Vision
Currently, SOS delivers healthcare services to nearly 16,000 individuals across multiple locations in Orange County, a testament to the firm foundation that Forbath laid during her 22 years as the unpaid executive director, until her retirement in 1991. Even after stepping down, her dedication did not wane; she continued her unwavering service on SOS’s board for another 39 years.
Forbath was also passionate about advocating for affordable housing and medical care, diligently addressing local government bodies such as the Costa Mesa City Council. Her vision of community support extended further when she co-founded the nonprofit Save Our Youth (SOY) in 1993, aiming to support first-generation college students from low-income families. Each year, the organization awards the “Jean Forbath Scholarship” to standout youths, ensuring her commitment to education and empowerment lives on.
A Legacy of Love
Jean leaves behind a loving family, including her children—Steve, Kathy, Mary, Susie, Patty, and Brian—as well as 15 grandchildren who will cherish her memory forever. She is predeceased by her beloved husband Frank and her son Joe, whose spirits undoubtedly accompany her.
Celebrating a Lifelong Advocate
To honor her incredible life and contributions to the community, a service will be held on May 9 at Saints Simon and Jude Catholic Church in Huntington Beach. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to either SOS or the Save Our Youth Jean Forbath Scholarship in her memory.
Jean Forbath’s legacy of love, compassion, and relentless advocacy for the marginalized will forever resonate within the hearts of those she touched. Her dedication reminds us all of the profound impact a single individual can have on their community. Goodbye, dear Jean. Your spirit will continue to light the way for many!
