Costa Mesa is a city in Orange County, California, near the cities of Newport Beach and Fountain Valley. It’s in the middle of everything between Los Angeles and San Diego, with world-class shopping, theater and arts, and excellent dining options. The city was formerly known as “Harper,” but after inhabitants became confused with a neighbouring town called Harperville, they organized a name-changing contest in 1920, and Costa Mesa was formed. Costa Mesa has grown from its agricultural beginnings to become one of the most desired areas to reside in the region. Locals recognize it as the site of the annual Orange County Fair.
Costa Mesa was founded by native American Indians who settled on the mesa near the banks of the Santa Ana River on the “coastal tableland” above Newport Beach. Artifacts discovered here indicate that this location was once part of the Lukup village.
