Newport Beach Welcomes New Red Hawk Family and Exciting Local Events Ahead
Oh, Newport Beach! There’s so much happening in this vibrant city, and residents are in for a treat with the arrival of a new feathered family, as well as a whole host of local events! Let’s dive right in.
A New Family Takes Flight
In an adorable turn of events, a pair of Red Hawks have decided to make the City’s Utilities Yard their new home! Residents have been buzzing with excitement as the city’s Utilities Director, Mark Vukojevic, shared some stunning photos taken from a discreetly positioned camera. And here’s the juicy part: this hawk couple laid three eggs, with the little ones hatching over the Easter weekend—two chicks popped out on April 18 and another blessed the nest on April 19.
The antics of these newly hatched chicks have already captured hearts, humorously being referred to as being put on the CALPERS Retirement System. Efforts are underway to ensure the family enjoys some privacy as their caring mama hawk gives her little ones some TLC. And if you’re a wildlife enthusiast, there’s been plenty of action around the nest! Observers have spotted two rats/mice nearby—one half-eaten and the other stored as a snack for the growing family. It looks like this hawk household is thriving!
Gardening and Blossoming Events
Switching gears from our feathered friends to flowers, the 35th Annual Southern California Spring Garden Show is currently blooming at South Coast Plaza. This year’s theme, “At Home in The Garden,” runs through April 27, and showcases over 40 garden vendors and a spectacular collection of exotic plants and flowers. It’s a perfect time to gather inspiration for your own backyard oasis!
Among the highlights is a captivating “Wonders of Nature” display crafted from various natural materials, as well as an onsite Palm Tour, showcasing an astounding 87 palms. With contributions from gardeners like Ralph Velez and Larry Black, the palm collection at South Coast Plaza has gained acclaim across Southern California.
Additionally, floral enthusiasts won’t want to miss the West Coast debut of Fleurs De Villes Downton Abbey, an immersive floral exhibition inspired by the beloved period drama, available for viewing until April 27.
Racing to the Finish Line
As if that wasn’t enough excitement, the Newport to Ensenada International Yacht Race marked its 77th year with a grand sail-off on April 25. Over 800 competitors are taking part across various yacht classes in this epic race, which spans 135 miles to Ensenada, Mexico and 90 miles to San Diego. Local sailor John Raymont, who won last year with his boat Fast Exit, is back to break his own record this time around. The thrill in the air is palpable!
Community Celebrations
Bringing the community together, on June 1 the Balboa Island Parade will celebrate its 30th anniversary with a heartfelt theme honoring our first responders. Don’t miss the after-party concert featuring local band M Street—it promises to be a memorable evening!
Just a few days later, on June 7, the 44th Annual Corona del Mar Scenic 5K and Fun Walk will invite families to enjoy scenic views and participate in a 2-Mile Fun Walk, as well as Youth, Dolphin dash races, and a Dog Parade. Such family-friendly events are a wonderful way to enjoy the outdoors together.
Honoring Academic Achievements
In another shining moment for the community, the Newport-Mesa Unified School District recently honored seven high school seniors with Superintendent’s Character Trait Awards for their outstanding traits like Caring, Citizenship, Courage, Fairness, Respect, Responsibility, and Trustworthiness. It’s a wonderful reminder of the great values being cultivated among the youth.
Lastly, in a bittersweet note for food lovers, Eddie V’s, the local seafood and steak restaurant located in the Bluff’s Shopping Center, will be closing its doors on June 15 after two decades of serving the community. It’s time to savor every last delicious bite!
So whether you’re keeping an eye on that cute hawk family, enjoying the beauty of local gardens, or participating in the thrilling yacht race, Newport Beach is buzzing with life and community spirit this season!
